WHAT I TREAT / SCIATICA

Sciatica

Sciatica — that burning, shooting, or numb pain down the leg — is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The work is figuring out what's actually irritating the nerve, calming it down, and rebuilding a back and hip that can load without setting it off again.

SYMPTOMS

What you may be experiencing.

  • 01Sharp or burning pain that travels from the low back or glute down the leg
  • 02Numbness, tingling, or 'pins and needles' below the knee
  • 03Pain that worsens with sitting, bending, or coughing
  • 04A leg that feels weak or heavy on stairs or pushing off
  • 05Symptoms that flare with deadlifts, long drives, or long runs

COMMON CAUSES

What might be behind it.

  • 01Lumbar disc-related nerve irritation (herniation or bulge)
  • 02Nerve-root compression (radiculopathy)
  • 03Piriformis and deep-glute-related symptoms
  • 04Stenosis-related leg pain in older adults
  • 05Protective guarding that keeps the nerve sensitized
  • 06Return to lifting or running after a flare-up

MY APPROACH

How I treat sciatica.

01

Assess

A thorough neurological and movement exam to confirm what's driving the symptoms, which positions provoke or relieve them, and — importantly — to rule out the red flags that need a referral. You leave the first visit with a clear picture of what's likely driving it and a plan for what's next.

02

Calm

Manual therapy — joint mobilization and soft tissue work — and specific movement strategies to settle the irritated nerve and get you out of the positions that keep flaring it, with clear guidance on what to do and what you can stop worrying about.

03

Build

Progressive loading to rebuild a back and hip that tolerate sitting, bending, running, and lifting again. The goal isn't just less leg pain — it's the capacity to trust the movement that used to set it off.
